The Peninsula Hotel, Beverly Hills

The Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills is a luxury hotel that evokes the feel of a private residence, with lush gardens and private villas. Having attended a wine tasting event this past week at the hotel,I got a bit of a tour of the grounds as well!

The courtyard fountain, just outside the "Living Room" - a great spot for drinks or high tea.

Just beyond the fountain are the villas, which truly resemble a private residence.

The rooftop deck boasts dramatic views of Beverly Hills and neighboring Century City skyrises. It also includes a pool, jacuzzi, private cabanas, and a rooftop bar.

The rooftop also has a lounge area and fire pit - great hangout spot for summer!

Lighten Up!

Occasionally it's refreshing to see interiors that are airy, light, and bright. While dark colors can be exciting and dramatic, lighter colors tend to be more soothing. Often times, clients request warm colors for the sake of having some richness to their rooms. Yet, this past week I did a paint color consultation for a client's new home where we went with "barely there colors" - paint colors almost devoid of anything but a hint of color. Sometimes it's nice to "lighten up!"

It seems being the "year of the dragon" has made it's way into interior design too.

This past week I was researching inspiration for closets and built-ins for a client project that currently requires renovating two bedrooms. The closets in both rooms may be visible to the room itself, so the most ideal way to make them presentable is to make them look good! That means built-in drawers and cabinetry, nice hardware and lighting, and other decorative elements to create a stylish closet space.

The Painted Ceiling

Typically, ceilings and trimwork are painted in white...but occasionally this calls for an exception. Especially if creating a dramatic room or working with a particular color where the normal white would create too much contrast. One trick is to "cut" the wall paint color in half (by diluting white) to create the same tone on tone affect for the ceiling. At other times, a room can call for a bold painted ceiling. Take a look at these examples!

Hotel Bel Air

The Hotel Bel Air (located here in Los Angeles) recently reopened after undergoing an extensive two year renovation. Interior Designer Alexandra Champalimaud was hired to recreate a new reception and boutique, new lobby lounge, all the guestrooms, suites, & twelve hillside villas along with the spa and guest lofts. Rockwell Group was commissioned to design the dining venues, for which chef Wolfgang Puck oversees all the food and beverage operations for the hotel. Throughout the process, insightful feedback from past guests was taken into consideration when implementing many of the hotel’s design changes. It was important to bring the hotel up to date, while retaining much of the character of the original hotel and the glamour of the 30's, 40's, and 50's.

The Classic White Kitchen

There is something about a white kitchen that screams "classic, clean, and timeless." While it may not be an appropriate look for every home it is often a request for many of my clients. With the right mix of finishes, there are a lot of variations on the classic white kitchen.

Cool Banquettes!

Banquettes can be a great solution for many breakfast or dining rooms, especially in more compact spaces or even as a way to provide ample seating. Creativity in design can run the gamut from shapes (think u-shape, bench style, curved) to design (drawers, lift-top storage, open underneath). Often times they maximize a room's potential and serve a multi-purpose function.

A cozy banquette like this one doubles as a work space too!

Even the most compact of spaces can fit in a banquette...this works great with the pull up stools.

Hope everyone is enjoying the holidays!

I spent the past weekend on Balboa Island in Newport Beach for a holiday getaway. On Christmas Eve, I got a special treat - I met fellow Material Girls blogger Emily who's visiting Southern California from Dallas! Emily along with her husband Ben came to Balboa Island for a brief visit. It was fun to meet up and show them around a bit!

It was a really beautiful day having brunch overlooking Newport Harbor.

Despite the "summer like" day, the private beach at the Balboa Bay Club was empty!

West Elm Store Opening Event

This past Thursday evening, west elm hosted a store opening celebation event at the newest location in West Hollywood on Beverly Boulevard. The event was hosted by a number of well known design bloggers and attended by guest celebs, actress Amy Smart & HGTV's Carter Oosterhouse.

The interiors of the two story, 14,000 square feet of retail space were designed by Thomas O'Brien of Aero Studios.

The "living wall" is a focal point featuring the west elm signage - and adds a bit of an organic feel to the rustic retail space.

Guests enjoyed checking out the store goods at west elm, where a portion of the night's shopping event proceeds benefits The Art of Elysium.

This past Thursday evening, I attended the store opening event of west elm's newest location on Beverly Boulevard in West Hollywood. The new 14,000 square foot space was designed by Thomas O'Brien of Aero Studios. The event was packed with celebs and design bloggers alike, including Bri Emery, Emily Henderson, Amy Smart & Carter Oosterhouse - among others. A portion of the night's proceeds was to benefit The Art of Elysium.

Check out these fun numbers chairs! I came across them in last month's issue of InStyle magazine. These colorful chairs come in an astounding 180 custom colors!

The chairs are manufactured by the Italian company, Billiani and sold through Eurotrend USA. They retail for about $550 per chair.

They are also available in natural woods, such as these beech versions.

But the laquered color versions are really fun! It would be neat to do something creative with these whimsical chairs!

Google is Here: A Peek Inside!

Google has recently opened new offices in Los Angeles, at the famed Franky Gehry designed "Binocular Building" in Venice.

Inside the binocular building is a sitting room where an oversized lightbulb hangs inside!

A the entrance, Google logos are plastered all over the walls and ceiling.

The interior offices of the sleek newly designed Los Angeles Google headquarters. But I think we still expected a little more whimsy in the workspace.

The offices even have a juice bar, cafe, snack bar, and a gym!

Early on Thursday morning I saw a tweet go past with a link to a recent blog post by Nicole Cohen of the blog Sketch42. The tweet said "Keith Haring inspired" and I was instantly drawn - and once I took a look at Nicole's post I was instantly in love! She had created an entry with Keith Haring inspired graphics painted (by her!) on the walls. Considering I've been a huge fan and collector of Keith Haring since my teens, I was by far impressed with this stunning entry!

Nicole wrote that she was also inspired by the work of Kelly Wearstler's entry at her Hillcrest Estate.

Lexington Home Brands Tour

While at High Point Market I had the opportunity to visit the Lexington Home Brands headquarters for an extensive tour of their three floors, 100,000 square feet of showroom space. Among the many lines Lexington carries, Henry Link Trading Co. and Tommy Bahama Home are part of their popular furniture collections. I was amazed at the vast selections and styles among all the collections, and impressed with the quality of the furnishings and fabric options.

High Point Highlights

I just returned from an amazing few days at High Point Market in North Carolina! I was invited to attend and tour the Lexington Home Brands headquarters (more on that in an upcoming post). But first wanted to share some highlights of the past few days' events and experiences!

Had the best time ever hanging out with these fabulous bloggers: (l-r) Christian of Maison21, Julieann of Create Girl, me, Cassandra of Coco + Kelly, Ashlina of The Decorista, Crystal of Plush Palate & Rue Magazine, and Katie of The Neo Traditionalist & Matchbook Magazine.

On the very first evening upon arriving at High Point, we were invited to meet Charles, the 9th Earl Spencer (Princess Diana's brother) at the Theodore Alexander showroom.

The Althrop Collection features over 500 years of English tradition and heritage.

On Day 2, we went over to the IHFC (International Home Furnishings Center) to check out the Elite Leather Company space.

Next, we headed over to Visual Comfort where Paloma (also of the blog La Dolce Vita) gave us a tour the Circa Lighting collections.

From there, Katie & I headed over to Market Square for a book signing event hosted by Rizzoli featuring Martyn Lawrence Bullard, Mary McDonald, Suzanne Kasler, Bobby McAlpine, Michael Connors, Henrietta Churchill Spencer, & Florence de Dampierre.

After the press breakfast, Katie & I, along with Erin of the blog Elements of Style head over to Lexington Home Brands for an exlusive tour of their headquarters (more on that to come!).

Back again at High Point "headquarters," we happen to meet Deborah Needleman, former editor of Domino magazine and current editor of the WSJ magazine. She had just spoken at an event at High Point & given away copies of her book, "The Perfectly Imperfect Home."

The rest of the afternoon, we checked out InterHall at the IHFC wrapping up with cocktail hour at the very cool Global Views space - thanks to Erin for hosting us!

Color Blocking

I was out shopping the other day with a friend, when we came across these Kate Spade handbags (below) and noticed the use of color blocking, a trend I have seen making a comeback in fashion. I think it makes an interesting use in architecture, art, interiors, and fashion!

It seems I am always and forever suggesting banquettes to clients for their eat-in kitchens, breakfast rooms, or dining rooms. Banquettes are often a great use of space, they provide maximum seating in the most compact areas and can double as storage too. Most often, they are practical and functional (and even offer a cozier place to sit and read a book or work on a laptop). I currently have a client building one for her new house, in the open flow kitchen / breakfast room and recently completed one for a client's kitchen that has a very small breakfast nook. Over time, I have collected images of beautiful banquettes for inspiration!

Rejuvenation slated to open a store at Helms Bakery

Portland, OR based Rejuvenation Lighting is opening it's third retail location, and it's first store here in Los Angeles. The new store is coming this Fall to the historic Helms Bakery District. The location suits the aesthetics of Rejuvenation just right, as quoted from their website: "We want to be in real neighborhoods and preserve buildings with rich history. That's why this move to Helms feels so right."

Rejuvenation is a great shopping source for finding period authentic lighting, house parts, and salvage finds.

Back from Summer Vacation!

Hope everyone is enjoying their "end of summer" weekend and had a great summer! I can't believe it's already September! I spent the month of August on Balboa Island in Newport Beach, CA where my family lives and my dad keeps his boat. I actually lived on the boat for the month and it was a really nice change of pace. Thought I would share some highlights from my summer vacation!

The boat is docked quite literally just steps from the beach, as seen here from the aft of the boat. These homes are on the Beacon Bay waterfront side of Balboa Island.

Paddling on the bay is very popular, many canoes, paddlers would go by daily...

...some with their dog too!

But I actually spent my summer days working...

...and here too.

But the reality is, most days were actually spent hard at work here.

But EVERY day at the *office* was finished with an amazing sunset like this one!

Mornings started early, where the water was like glass and it was peacefully quiet.

My sleeping quarters were not the "captain's quarters," instead I opted for a modest "cabin."

And the most compact bathroom I ever got ready in each and every day. (Although it's not every day you see a seal swim by from the "head!")

The galley style kitchen located on the lowest level of the boat.

When I did venture off the boat, my favorite thing to do is take the Ferry from Balboa Island across the harbor to the Balboa Peninsula side. The Ferry is just $1 per person each way, it crosses the bay continuously from early morning until late at night and carries both cars and passengers.

My favorite place to go is Newport Landing Restaurant, they have the best happy hour too!

Our boat is docked just steps away from Marine Avenue on Balboa Island, the one main street lined with shops and restaurants. I walked it daily but unfortunately didn't have time to explore some of the home decor shops, like this one (and others that I'd like to eventually feature on the blog).

I mostly walked through town to get to Little Balboa Island (where our house is) passing by the homes on the canal side...

...and over a bridge.

I've since said "goodbye" to my "summer office" - and am now back home!

HGTV Home & Shaw Floors Event

Last week, I attended an event to experience a new line of flooring from Shaw Floors for HGTV Home, a partnership known as HGTV Home Flooring by Shaw Floors. The event took place in North Carolina, starting with a kick-off dinner at the Biltmore in Asheville, NC. Part of the three day event was to partner with another blogger to create a room design challenge featuring two products from the HGTV Home by Shaw Floors collection. Prior to dinner, we gathered for cocktail hour where we got a chance to browse the collection and choose our flooring. I was selected to partner with Pam from the blog Retro Renovation. (Pam and I had previously met before, so it was fun to team up together for this event - as well as hone in on our mutual admiration for modern and contemporary design.)

We started first with selecting our area rug from the HGTV Home Area Rugs collection, a line that features over 120 area rugs which includes everything from traditional and transitional to contemporary . Pam and I gravitated toward one of the more modern rugs called Mod Links.

The area rug we choose for our design challenge room, Mod Links in Beige (which also comes in Black and Dark Brown).

Next, we selected a hardwood flooring that would be installed wall to wall in our mock up room design. While the Shaw Floors line of hardwood floors has an amazing assortment of hardwoods, many of them rustic and distressed, in various colors, we opted for a more sleek darker wood species to work in our room.

Also, included in the collection is a line of carpet in various colors, patterns, and textures.

Once we finalized our decisions, we placed our "order" with a Shaw representative who immediately called the order in to Shaw Headquarters in Dalton, GA. The amazing thing is that the entire order (along with the selections of the other teams, five in total) was to be shipped out and driven across the state to Greensboro, NC and installed in our rooms (five "bays") by early the next morning when we arrived at Tribuzio-Hilliard, the studio location and furnishing warehouse we used to create our room design.

On Day 2, we arrived by late morning to the Tribuzio-Hilliard studio where we got a brief tour and were greeted (much to our surprise!) by Lisa LaPorta from HGTV's Designed to Sell.

Once we got to see our rooms in person (complete with the fast track overnight installation of our flooring selections!) we were let loose to run around the Tribuzio-Hilliard warehouse to "grab" what we could of their huge assortment of furniture, lighting, and accessories. Here's my team partner Pam from Retro Renovation along with our assigned designer Dawn from (who knew just where to find what we were looking for!) - as they scout for side chairs at the very top of the racks.

We quickly nabbed a green sofa, leopard side chair, and a round retro looking coffee table to fit into the scheme of our room design - which was going in the direction of a mod retro glam look to tie in with our Mod Links area rug. With a little extra assistance, Ashley from Empower Media Marketing holds up artwork for Pam and I to decide on.

On the second day of the two day room design challenge (essentially the 8th hour), our room was finally taking shape. Overnight, it had been painted, window treatments (custom!) had been installed, we had cushions "upholstered" for our window seats, and a fly wall brought in to create a fireplace complete with a painted mantle and hearth (which was painted brown to tie in with the ceiling trim) - a touch we added to correlate with the brown "links" in the Mod Links area rug. We spent the final hour hastily accessorizing our room (and making a few last minute decisions!)...

And here it is: the completed room!

Of course, we had much competition with the four other teams who all created amazing rooms! The Pink Swan Project

SUITE New York has launched The Pink Swan Project, a collection of nineteen Arne Jacobsen chairs designed by well known designers to be auctioned off for charity to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The chairs were donated by Fritz Hansen and the auction will take place in October. The chairs will be on rotating display at the Gagosian Shop on Madison Avenue while the rest of the chairs rest in SUITE New York’s showroom on Park Avenue.

Palihouse in West Hollywood

Last week I finally had the pleasure of checking out Palihouse, a boutique hotel in the heart of West Hollywood. The thing that sets Palihouse apart from many of the neighboring hotels is that it is known more as an "urban lodge" and offers a "residential-style" stay. The hotel has furnished pied-a-terres that can be rented for up to six-twelve month stays, along with one bedroom and loft residences, and if looking to stay just for a night or few days, the traditional guest suite. The hotel also has a courtyard brasserie for dining, an espresso bar, a lobby lounge, and a rooftop deck for special events. So last Thursday after the Restoration Hardware store opening, my friends and I headed over to Palihouse to meet up with Raymond, the Public Relations Manager for Palihouse and his friend Kristen for a drink...and to take a look at the hotel!

Walking into the lobby off the busy West Hollywood streets, I felt like I'd been transported into an old world Parisian style space, with an industrial Bohemian vibe all mixed into one. The lobby is filled with vintage art and furnishings, chairs upholstered in distressed leather, dark walnut finishes, and a Morooccan tiled floor.

Restoration Hardware Store Opening

This past Thursday evening, I attended the store opening of Restoration Hardware's newest location in West Hollywood. The new space features a 24,000 square foot, two story showroom complete with a pebbled courtyard and room vignettes or "The Gallery" as it's called. The party was packed and filled with celebs, it was such an amazing turn out!

Once we checked in at the guest list, we entered into the main entry (pictured above) from the garden courtyard. The large scale lanterns, hanging by rope are stunning - in fact, all their lighting is really amazing (I think that's one of the features that really caught my eye in the new space).

In one of the main gallery spaces (where we hung out most of the night actually) is an oversized tufted sofa (so comfortable!), two of the reclaimed French floorboard coffee tables (back to back), with a large scale chandelier (again, another stunning light fixture!).

I am still loving Pinterest, as I blogged about before here. It is such a huge assortment of visual eye candy, and I have amassed a collection of images, pinned and repinned and pinned again. My collection of boards range from bathrooms to bedrooms, to living rooms to libraries, to outdoor spaces, with fun things in between like quotes, travel, and fashion. But one of my favorite boards is the "Details" board, which has images of some really unique decor details. Take a look!

Terranea Resort in Palos Verdes, CA

This past week, my friend Brooke invited me to dinner for my birthday at Terranea Resort in Palos Verdes, CA. Terranea is a destination that sits right on the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The resort evokes the feeling of being somewhere else (such as Hawaii) and not just twenty-five minutes from the bustling LA streets. As a native South Bay/Palos Verdes resident, Brooke has been frequenting the resort for dinners and drinks and kept telling me I had to check it out. As it turns out, it worked perfectly for last week and I think now it's going to be on my frequent destination list!

The entrance to Terranea: as you walk in you feel as if you've been transplanted to Hawaii, yet this is a local Southern California resort.

The main lobby has a tropical, beachy vibe.

Straight through the main lobby are doors that lead to a terrace with a dramatic back drop of the Pacific Ocean (and in the distance, Catalina Island). Unfortunately, we have been experiencing a bit of our typical "June Gloom" weather but even so, the views were amazing and I am looking forward to returning on a warm summer evening.

The outdoor terrace (which overlooks the view above) and it's outdoor fireplace, Spanish tile floors, and oversize potted plants.

We had dinner at Catalina Kitchen (it was SO good!) AND if you go on your birthday, they offer a complimentary surf & turf dinner (can't pass that up!).

This picture is a little blurry but I loved these hanging lanterns, a blended mix of colors which looked so pretty as they glowed when it got dark.

Los Angeles Sales & Events

For Angelenos, a few upcoming sales and events are taking place, starting this weekend!

This weekend, on Saturday June 18th, Palihouse (as in the hotel, which I blogged about here) is having it's own garage sale.

Here are the deets: The sale will be at the Hacienda garage entrance, items include: sofas, tables, chairs, casegoods, headboards, Moroccan lamps, lamp shades, hammocks, and other finds from the Palihouse archives. A DJ will be spinning through the event and coffee is available from the Espresso Bar.

Now, you can really truly have that hotel to room look I featured!

Starting on Friday, June 17th (and running until July 10th), both the Los Angeles and San Francisco HD Buttercup locations are having their half yearly sales with as much as 20-70% off the entire store (sofas, light fixtures, tables etc.).

Blog Series: "This is the story of..."

Continuing with our blog series about our paths, which started with Emily's post back awhile ago, and began with this reader request:

...is my story:

Background: I think given my lineage, I was destined to become an interior designer. I grew up in a family involved in the design and building industry. My grandfather was a developer (and one of the early developer's of the Trousdale Estates in Beverly Hills), my father (now retired) was president of a division of a carpet mill, my mother is an interior designer (and currently working as a designer in a furniture showroom), my aunt is an interior designer (fun fact: decorator Michael Smith grew up next door to her, and a few streets over from where I grew up, and used to come over and read my aunt's Architectural Design magazines), my aunt's husband, Russell Jacques, is a well known artist, my other uncle is a builder (specializing in historical and structural restoration, has completed notable projects such as the restoration of the Museum of Science in Downtown Los Angeles), another relative (by marriage) was an early developer of Bunker Hill in Downtown Los Angeles and Promontory Point in Newport Beach, and his children, my cousins John & Craig are successful builders in Orange County. And I thought I would consider interior design as a hobby. Right. I guess that's not how it works when it's embedded in your genes. (Even my last name in German Seide means silk, apparently my Austrian ancestors were silk traders.)

Early Signs: Since I can remember, I have been drawing furniture plans and houses. While other kids in school were drawing stick figures, I would draw floor plans and layouts of houses. When we got to play with clay and play-doh in school, I used to mold it into rooms complete with furniture. Later on, I started rearranging the furniture in my bedroom. I actually have a letter I wrote (and was hoping to find it for this post, but it wasn't where I thought it might be, so I need to keep searching) - but it was a letter I wrote when I was probably in second or third grade, and I guess we had to write "When I grow up..." and I wrote how I wanted to be an interior designer like my mom. In the letter I listed all the things interior designers do (looking back, I actually can't believe I knew some of the things I wrote!). I guess when you grow up with a mom working at her drafting board (until late at night, which is what I remember!) - you learn these things!

Education: When I was in high school, I decided to spend a summer attending a pre-college program at Otis/Parsons School of Art & Design (now Otis here in Los Angeles). It was a lot of work for a summer program, but a great experience and an insightful one into the world of design and architecture. I think it greatly impacted my interest in architecture, too. After graduating high school, I attended the UCLA Architecture & Interior Design program. I left UCLA for one semester, to attend the Architecture/Landscape/Interiors program at Otis, and then ultimately came back to UCLA to complete my education.

Freelance Design: After completing my education, I decided to market myself as a freelance design assistant to design firms. I created a cover letter (which I faxed out to design firms) marketing my services and setting my freelance rate. This was such a great way of gaining experience, having worked for many different design firms in many different facets of design. I have had the opportunity to work in both commercial and residential interior design firms, design showrooms, large firms and boutique firms, and along the way some very interesting clients (celebs!). I really think for those interested in pursing a career in interior design that taking some time (whether in school or after graduating) to work in different areas of design, possibly as a freelancer, is extraordinarily beneficial. Along the way I learned a lot, made a great deal of connections, and developed relationships with other designers.

On my own: Eventually there came a time to go out on my own, and start my own design business. I think for me it was a very natural progression. It sort of came about when one of the designer's I was working for had slowed down a bit. I listed a profile on Guru.com and my first few projects came in (a client remodeling her bathroom in Santa Monica, a florist retail shop in Orange County). Soon I discovered I was taking on more projects and continuing to freelance a few day's a week. As I got busier, I decided I needed more time to focus on my projects and ultimately quit working freelance. Happy to be completely on my own now, but it's certainly a lot of work! My days (like Emily mentioned too) are very long - from early morning meetings to late client evening meetings, to running around in between, to catching up on emails and the "real design work" begins late in the day or night. However, I enjoy being on my own, working for myself, being responsible for everything that comes with running one's own business, and the rewards of a project completed. I also enjoy the process and most of all the learning. Each and every day I seem to learn something new, from blogs to research to subs to vendors to even my clients (whom share experiences with me too!).

And to our readers: If you enjoy interior design, there are so many opportunities and arenas of design that you can work in. I would encourage an education (especially to learn about art history, color, and drawing in addition to the technical/business aspects of design) but also to gain work experience (it's really the vocational aspect of working that you really learn hand's on). And I think for the pros and cons, Emily listed it the best, here.

And lastly, social media: It wasn't around when I first started, but it is now and it's a huge advantage, to interact with people on a level like never before. Before I started blogging on the Material Girls blog, I was not very familiar with the blog world. So much has changed; I now have a whole new community of blogger and twitter friends! I hope you'll find my there, too!

Showroom Visit: Filmore Clark

In the heart of West Hollywood, in the design district just off Melrose Avenue near the Pacific Design Center, is Filmore Clark - a showroom housing "artisan tiles." The showroom features unique collections of glass, tile, and stone from domestic manufactures, including: Pratt Larson, Tempest Tileworks, Tile Guild, and more - including local artisans. I have been working with Lee (the founder) for some of the bathroom projects I am currently working on. She's been a huge help and has over 15 years of expertise!

Here's a look at the Filmore Clark showroom:

The front facing part of the showroom faces the street, with parking and a rear entrace. Collections line the walls and the space offers amazing lighting.

Colors, patterns, and textures of various sizes and shapes provide inspiration.

The front part of the showroom features handmade decorative tiles, many of which can be customized by color and design.

The front entrance of the space features additional decorative tiles handmade locally, which can also be customized.

The mosaic's come in a range of colors and sizes, glossy and matte.

Love her collection of glass tiles, the color palette is the best I think I have ever seen (comes in both gloss and a sanded finish) and can be translated into a wealth of patterns.

Love the silver detailing and pattern on this glass tile!

This pattern is so fresh and fun (the sample is from a new shipment that Lee got in)!

And more glass patterns to choose from (I love the collection on the far right - definitely want to consider those for a next project!).

The ceramics also come in a huge assortment of colors. In fact, we are working with one of the bamboo patterns (from another tile collection) and using the solid crackle tile as a liner for the tile layout and design.

In the Pantry

Having a walk-in pantry is a luxury. Many of the kitchen remodels I have been designing lately have not been able to afford such a luxury due to space limitations. Instead the client has opted for tall pantry storage, which is still essential even if it means forgoing upper and lower cabinets, and using a portion of counter space to accommodate tall pantry storage. But with one exceptional client, she has not only room for a butler's pantry - but also a walk-in pantry. Because this is a room in itself - the idea came into play: how do we make this room a beautiful space? I think the images here provide some great inspiration (the above picture being my favorite)!

Hotel to Room

This past week, the latest issue of Nesting Newbies online magazine was released with a very jam packed issue No 5. One of my favorite features was the "Vacation Inspiration" spread, starting on page 152. The feature included a hot list of hotels and the furnishings inspired by them to create your own "Hotel to Room."

Check out these great inspiration ideas to recreate that hotel to room look:

I love the glam and color scheme of The Lowes in New Orleans.

The Carlyle in New York has a really great graphic area rug and orange drapery panels, long admired Crate & Barrel's starburst mirror.

Paris' Pad

Making the rounds of real estate and design blogs last week, was the announcement that Paris Hilton's former house is available for rent. The house, located on Kings Road in West Hollywood sold in 2007 for $3.8 million and is currently available to rent for $20,000 a month. The listing agent is Mauricio Umansky, husband of Paris' aunt and The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Kyle Richards.

In case you missed the visuals, here goes!

In this room, Paris is certainly the focal point. All very glam, mirrored and black & white. Accessories? A Fendi throw pillow and mirrored obelisks.

The dining room is bright and crisp in white with contrasting ebony wood floors, a mirrored dining table, and a crystal chandelier.

The entry foyer, high in black and white contrast complete with a zebra striped area rug to carry the theme.

Paris's mirrored bed (as also seen in Emily's recent post), accented in pretty shades of pale pink.

Step into Paris' closet: a mirrored dresser and a glam chandelier make this the ultimate girly girl walk-in closet.

The private backyard has a poolside tented cabana and chaises decked out in black and white.
