Costume Designers Guild Awards

image

This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending the 16th Costume Designers Guild Awards in Beverly Hills, CA. The event happens to be produced by a high school friend of mine who works for Jumpline, producers of the annual awards show.

image

On display and on loan from a costume house, were Dorothy's red heels from the Wizard Of Oz - so neat to see in person! (And apparently my friend Deme had these on her coffee table before returning - ha!)

image

We were fortunate to have access to the VIP reception (celeb hangout), and I happen to catch actress Amy Adams in a flash.

image

Typhanie and I had fun taking selfies in the glamorous old school mirrors at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where the event took place.

image

We also saw Mad Men actress, Kiernan Brennan Shipka, mingling before the awards ceremony.

The next day, I attended a post event brunch and panel discussion with several of the recognized and awarded costume designers.

image

The event was hosted by Lacoste.

image

On display were fashion designs by FIDM students representing various film genres.

image

After the symposium was a rooftop brunch (at Siren Studios) with views of Hollywood.

Shirley and I enjoying a gorgeous February, yes February, day in LA (a glimpse of the Hollywood sign was in our backdrop).

And a very fun surprise: seeing our friend artist Gregory Siff art on the ground level entrance of Siren Studios.

Design Trivia: What's behind those crazy color names?

Have you ever been picking out paint colors and wondered about those crazy paint color names? Here's a little trivia on what goes into picking out those color names...along with some impressionable colors that'll keep you remembering!

image

"Mole's Breath" came after the success of Farrow & Balls "Elephant Breath". Looking for a shade of gray? This one could be a good one!

image

"Ship's Ahoy" references a nautical hue, but could be a nod to "Chip's Ahoy".

image

"Exclusive Plum" was crowned by Sherwin-Williams as their color of the year. Move over, Radiant Orchid.

image

"Chop Sticks" is used to describe a warm, neutral beige. Not a bad point of reference when you can't perfectly describe a beige.

image

Thinking of going "Vegan"? This green is lighter than kale but darker than celery.

image

"Functional Gray" makes a well-rounded neutral.

image

"Miami Weiss" taken from the German word, "white" - this color pairs well with "South Peach".

Mirror, Mirror

Gone are the days of an ordinary bathroom mirror. You know, that thin piece of large glass that amassed a wall. Today, unique mirrors make a statement in a bathroom. Whether store bought or custom made, these ideas will make your bathroom...a true reflection of yourself!

Powder Room Pattern

image

A powder room, or guest bathroom, is a great space to play it up - add a bold color, pattern, graphics. Being a room that's not for every day use (like dressing and getting ready in), it's a space that won't have as much ill effect on how you look (bad lighting or color can sometimes equate to bad reflection). Of course, you still may want your guests to feel and look glamorous. These ideas may just help!

image

Match the walls the vanity top? Who says too matchy isn't good? This just works!

image

A pretty wallpaper pattern and a patterned pendant create visual interest.

image

Modern and masculine with this subtle pattern and minimalists vanity.

Tilt the mirror for a little floor reflection.

image

Seeing spots? A fun and whimsical pattern.

image

Marbleized wallpaper: it's all the rage.

image

Wide black and white stripes are very classic and can be applied with either paint or wallpaper. An easy DIY project.

image

Go for the wow factor!

And more pretty: consider patterns that are organic and an inspiration of nature.
