Daily Candy's LA Editor's Silver Lake Home

image

Daily Candy's Los Angeles editor Evelyn Crowley recently shared her modern Silver Lake abode on the fun, popular site. Her home was designed by DISC Interiors, an LA based design duo. Here's the exclusive tour of her very chic family and pet friendly home!

image

The living room features a tonal color palette (echoing the nearby Silver Lake hills) along with earthy accents.

Furnishings from both big box stores and local vintage shops were intermixed, to reflect a variety of styles and periods. The living room sofa is from Crate & Barrel, the club chairs are vintage, while the entry console is from West Elm.

The art above the chest is made by a friend of Evelyn's (& frequent contributer to Daily Candy).

Currently loving Indigo, these hand dyed pillows are from Hollywood at Home.

Touring the Zillow Headquarters

image

The online real estate site Zillow recently set up chic new office spaces in the heart of San Francisco's Financial District. The new headquarters are located within the city's old school Standard Oil building.

image

The large scale windows provide scenic city views and pull up meetings areas like the above are available for impromptu meetings.

This cute little conference room features grid wallpaper of the city and each conference room is named for one of the distinct SF neighborhoods.

The office spaces are meant to be chic and stylish, many of the area rugs and sofas are from West Elm.

The company's trademark colors blue and green are incorporated into the color scheme along with other pops of color, like orange, set against a neutral background.

Screen Shot 2013-09-16 at 2.38.51 PM

It's hard to believe that Fall is upon us (at least in Los Angeles, where it still feels like summer!) but Fall Market is taking place this week at the Pacific Design Center. Looking forward to attending events and seeing fellow interior designers and bloggers. If you plan to attend, here are the deets.

Dividing Spaces

JillSeidner5

Some rooms call for a division between spaces (partitions, pony walls, glass, room dividers - can all be options). Here are some creative and inspirational ideas for creating distinct areas between rooms.

JillSeidner6

A freestanding "floating" partition creates a division between a living and dining room, along with a great opportunity to create a gallery wall of artwork.

JillSeidner2

Simple and sculptural: a contemporary divider to define a staircase.

JillSeidner4

Simple designed wood panels that slide provide a division of space with functionality.

JillSeidner7

Tall sliding glass doors are an elegant way to create a subdivision between rooms.

JillSeidner11

A wall with clerestory openings offers privacy between spaces yet not a full height barrier.

JillSeidner10

Framing out a doorway with glass is a great room to open up any door to a room to make it feel more open and accessible.

JillSeidner9

Framed glass walls create rooms within rooms.

And dividers for exteriors too!

Mixing It Up!

1JillSeidner

In both interiors and fashion, sometimes it's fun to break out of the norm and mix things up a bit, be it color or pattern or any mix of eclectic styles. These rooms evoke a balanced harmony despite a mix of colors and pattern - try mixing it up!

Cameron Diaz Chic Kelly Wearstler Designed Apartment

Diaz-EDC-09-13-01-lgn

Being a self-described design enthusiast herself, actress Cameron Diaz enlisted Kelly Wearstler to help design her pre-war West Village apartment after realizing most of the design inspiration ideas she had saved were the work of Los Angeles based Wearstler. She had owned the 2,400 square foot apartment for sometime and had done some minor renovations and decorating (painting the all white walls) before deciding it was time to completely redesign the space.

The living room features a custom Mansour Modern area rug, vintage stools, and a Murano chandelier.

The dining room features a wall of mirrored tiles.

The kitchen's backsplash, counters, and fittings are all unlacquered brass! The brass trim cabinetry is lacquered in a custom color. The flooring is an ebony stain then cerused.

The master bedroom features a silk wallcovering and gilded paper on the ceiling.

The master bathroom has glass tiles from Ann Sacks, the mirror and vanity are custom, and the fittings are from Waterworks.

In the guest bedroom, the four poster bed is custom along with the parchment covered nightstands. The chandelier is a 1960 fixture from Austria.

The Built-In Desk

Often times, modest homes are short on workspace: a guest bedroom may have to double up as an office, a corner of a kitchen or dining space becomes a work space, or worse, a bedroom becomes that place you tend to get work done. In an ideal world, having a designated work space is the the best way to maintain organization avoiding the intrusion of work overtaking personal life. A compact built-in desk can often help. Whether created from a kitchen nook, a hallway, or even a closet - here are some great ideas for the built-in desk.

JillSeidner1

A minimalist floating desk and shelving carved out of a wide hallway.

JillSeidner7

A bookcase merges with a sculptural work space surface.

JillSeidner6

A family room area with a built-in desk is great space for many members of the family to share.

JillSeidner5

When storage is essential planning a multi-purpose work area that is conducive to multiple work spaces and added storage.

JillSeidner4

A compact work area like this can work great in a kitchen or breakfast nook space.

JillSeidner3

A set up like this works great in a spare room, like a guest bedroom, complete with a tv.

JillSeidner2

A pretty light filled spot like this (off a kitchen) may be compact but provides a designated work area.
